The SOS Luton Bus is one of the most important projects to make Luton even safer than it already is. Luton is one of the first towns in the UK to offer a 24 hour 365 day mobile health, medical and community engagement vehicle able to offer a wide range of services to our residents, visitors, businesses, pupils and students.
AT NIGHT
The SOS Bus will be based outside St. George’s Square, Luton and will have a number of important aims linked to the late night economy on a Friday & Saturday between 9.00pm and 3.30am for young people and adults of all ages who need:
1. Emergency first aid & medical care that will avoid sending people to hospital unnecessarily which currently accounts for 88% of all ambulance calls on a Saturday night.
2. To reduce anti-social behaviour caused by alcohol/drug misuse.
3. To reduce criminal damage to cars, homes and property caused by alcohol/drug misuse.
4. To reduce violent crime and fights caused by alcohol/drug misuse.
5. Support to vulnerable people at risk through theft of money, lost, disorientated, theft of belongings, mental health, relationship violence, abuse, intimidation, harassment, homelessness and people with learning or physical disabilities.
6. Support for people suffering the effects of drug misuse.
7. Support for people suffering the effects of alcohol misuse.
8. Practical help contacting friends and relatives of vulnerable people.
9. A place of safety for children and young people who are at risk, lost or vulnerable.
10. Advice or information on safe sexual health or drug and alcohol awareness.
11. Signposting to other services, help or support
12. Contacting relatives or friends due to any of the above
13. Working closely with pubs, clubs, restaurants and fast food outlets responding to their customers who may need any of the above services
DURING THE DAY
Equally important, the second major role of this project will be the extended use of the SOS Bus. The bus is available for hire during the day where it could be used to extend further into the community and used for outreach work.
