Following an event for intercessors hosted by Care yesterday, here are some prayer topics for the for the next 6 months:
Equality bill
Give thanks that, after prayer yesterday and contrary to popular expectation, an amendment by David Drew on the Equality bill was heard. He was able to speak well about Christian churches’ concerns over the issues of freedom of choice in whom they employ. There was a good debate which put pressure on the government about our concerns. Ann Widdecombe was also called to speak about similar concerns for Catholic adoption societies.
Pray for the bill as it now goes to the Lords to be discussed in detail. Pilgrim homes (Methodist Care for the Elderly) are also badly affected by this draft legislation, as well as the churches and Catholic adoption agencies. Please pray that Christian organisations’ needs for special treatment will be understood and met, and that these adoption agencies and Care homes will not be forced to close.
Euthanasia bill
Give thanks that there was a vote firmly against this in July. Pray for more Christians to submit a view to the public consultation before the December 16th deadline. The Voluntary Euthanasia Society are very persuasive and well funded, so we need to battle in prayer over this.
Children, Schools and Families Bill
Sex and Relationship education is currently only done in primary schools if the parents and governors agree to it. The Government want it to be on the National Curriculum for all children from the age of 5. The bill suggests that civil partnerships should be considered in class alongside marriage. Care’s successful schools programme “Evaluate” would be affected adversely by the bill as it stands.
General Election
Please pray for more Christian MPs to be elected. Andrew Selous, MP for South Bedfordshire, is working hard at Parliament, gathering Christian MPs together and making their voice heard. Gavin Shuker is hoping to be selected as a candidate for Luton South Labour party – please pray for both these Christian men and that more will join them to be salt and light in their communities. Pray for Fiona Bruce who has been selected to stand in Congleton.
